Winter Wonders: A WIDA-Aligned Accessible Literacy Unit (K–3)
A five-day literacy unit designed to support language development, accessibility, and engagement for early elementary learners through standards-aligned, scaffolded instruction.
Audience
K–3 classroom teachers, ESL specialists, and instructional coaches supporting early literacy and multilingual learners.
Context
Early elementary classrooms include learners with diverse language backgrounds, literacy readiness levels, and learning needs. Teachers require instructional units that integrate content learning with intentional language development while remaining accessible to all students.
Goal
To design an inclusive, WIDA-aligned literacy unit that supports reading, writing, speaking, and listening through scaffolded instruction and Universal Design for Learning
Instructional Intent
Winter Wonders is a five-day, standards-aligned literacy lesson designed to support early elementary learners through integrated reading, writing, and language development activities. The lesson incorporates UDL principles and WIDA-aligned supports to ensure access for multilingual learners.
Instructional Design Approach
This unit was developed using the ADDIE framework. Analysis focused on learner language needs and literacy readiness. Design and development emphasized scaffolded instruction and accessibility, while evaluation considered student engagement and demonstrated understanding across modalities.
