Decodable Text Toolkit
Systematic Phonics Practice for Early Readers
Project Overview
I designed this collection of decodable texts to provide beginning readers with focused practice applying phonics skills in connected text. The toolkit includes a sequenced set of short-vowel CVC readers, texts targeting more advanced phonics patterns, and teacher-facing templates and guides for creating additional decodable materials.
Each text was designed around a defined phonics target, controlled vocabulary, and an accessible format so learners could practice decoding within meaningful, engaging text. The foldable booklets were printed and assembled to verify that the layouts functioned as practical classroom resources.

Building Skills Systematically
How can decodable texts support learners as phonics knowledge becomes increasingly complex?
I organized the readers as a progression rather than a collection of isolated texts. The beginning set provides concentrated practice with short-vowel CVC patterns, allowing learners to apply developing sound-symbol knowledge in connected text.
The more advanced readers extend that practice to increasingly complex phonics patterns. Across the sequence, the goal remains consistent: give learners enough control over the text to practice the targeted skill successfully while continuing to read for meaning.
Framework Principle
Learning develops through purposeful progression—building from secure foundational skills toward increasingly complex application.

Instructional Insight
Decodable text is most effective when its complexity develops alongside learners’ phonics knowledge, giving them opportunities to apply newly learned patterns successfully in connected text.

Teacher-Facing Formatting and Production Guide
I created teacher-facing guidance to make the decodable texts practical and reproducible. The guide provides step-by-step directions for formatting, printing, and assembling both half-fold and quarter-fold mini-books, along with design considerations that support readability and decoding practice.
Framework Principle
Effective design extends learning by giving educators adaptable tools they can use to respond to the needs of their own learners.

Instructional Insight
Instructional materials are most useful when they are not only well designed, but also practical for educators to produce, adapt, and use in everyday instruction.
Formatting Guide for Decodable Mini-Books
This teacher-facing guide provides step-by-step directions for formatting, printing, and assembling half-fold and quarter-fold decodable mini-books. It also includes practical design guidance for creating clear, readable texts that support decoding practice and classroom use.
